About SSE
Mission statement by the President
Welcome to the Stockholm School of Economics – one of the leading business schools in Europe
In 1909 leading members of the Swedish business community, with support from the municipal and national governments, founded the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) and announced its mission - to provide educational programs based on current and relevant research in economics, business administration and related disciplines to prepare young people for leading roles in Swedish companies.
Now, nearly a century later, that mission remains, but it has expanded. SSE graduates not only lead companies but also work within public administration and increasingly they are entrepreneurs or work within small, flexible organizations. Some graduates also remain at SSE, earning doctoral degrees and pursuing careers as teachers and researchers. The School’s mission has also evolved to meet the needs of professionals for life-long learning.
Alongside these developments the geographic scope of the School’s activity has expanded: once a strictly national institution, SSE is now active throughout the Baltic region, with centers in Riga, St Petersburg and Moscow. SSE’s full-time MBA and other international programs attract students from every corner of the globe.
As the School’s educational mission has evolved, one factor has remained constant, the high quality of our students. Applications to the MSc Program far outnumber the places available, which ensures that we attract well-prepared and highly motivated students.
Much of what we do at SSE aims to create and enrich a dynamic learning space that rests on four cornerstones. The first is academic excellence, represented primarily by our research faculty, who work to stay abreast of global developments and strive at times to lead those developments. The second, as mentioned earlier, is the talent and ambition of our students. The third is a close and active relationship with the business community, which supports the School not only financially, but also by providing case studies and data, by hosting internships and by bringing up-to-date managerial experience into our classrooms. The fourth is our teaching staff, all committed to helping learners understand the complex bodies of knowledge that we call business studies and economics.
